The popular history of Chatsworth House as we know it, begins with Elisabeth Talbot, countess of Shrewsbury, who was better known as Bess of Hardwick. Bess was born into a modest family in Derbyshire but rose to become the second most powerful women in England, after Queen Elizabeth 1st. Bess had four husbands, but it was the second to Sir William Cavendish that would establish the family line that has continued to the present day at Chatsworth.
It wasn’t possible to visit Chatsworth House out of hours. The usual programme of events including evening plays in the theatre, had been curtailed. We had no option but to record during public opening times, which is far from ideal. Because of restrictions to the number of visitors permitted into the house, the amount of accessible rooms and our ability to thoroughly inspect each one, our tour was limited.
