Hampton Court Palace, originally built by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey and later expanded by Henry VIII, became arguably the most important royal residence. As the size of the royal court grew to over 1000 people, large-scale food production was critical to the smooth running of the palace. The expansion of the kitchens around 1529 transformed them into the largest catering machine in Tudor England.
Staying within the walls of the palace was a life changing experience. When I was a child, my father instilled a love of history in me, through visiting historic houses and looking after antique furniture and artwork. My first walk around the cloisters and corridors of Hampton Court mentally knocked me sidewards. I could not have been more removed from such wealth growing up, but being here felt oddly like coming home. What I had no knowledge of in 2014, is that a very distant relative may possibly have boarded in an apartment, that was once the Spice Offce. Coincidence maybe?!
