Founded in 1970, The Weald and Downland Museum takes you on a journey in time, over Southeastern England; through the lens of domestic life, from early Anglo-Saxon homesteads to 20th century artisanal workshops. Walking the paths I felt transported to a long-forgotten world, with each building deepening my awareness of how challenging life was in earlier and much tougher times.

Exploring the houses, shops and farm settlements, the higgledy piggledy village composes of architectural styles familiar to anybody who’s walked down a rural road in England; although since being erected here, the modern amenities were removed and the structures have been restored, to how they appeared when first built.

When I visit historically meaningful sites, subconsciously I expect EVP to reflect the status of the buildings and feature those who owned or lived in them. This is of course likely to be proved a false expectation.
